Electronic Dictionary In Education
An electronic dictionary is a dictionary whose data exists in digital
form and can be accessed through a number of different media. Electronic
dictionaries can be found in several forms, including:
- as dedicated handheld devices
- as apps on smartphones and tablet computers or computer software
- as a function built into an E-reader
- as CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs, typically packaged with a printed dictionary, to be installed on the user’s own computer
- as free or paid-for online products
Most types of dictionary are
available in electronic form. These include general-purpose monolingual and bilingual dictionaries, historical
dictionaries such as the Oxford English Dictionary, monolingual learner's dictionaries,
and specialized dictionaries of every type,
such as medical or legal dictionaries, thesauruses,
travel dictionaries, dictionaries of idioms, and pronunciation
guides.
Most of the early electronic
dictionaries were, in effect, print dictionaries made available in digital
form: the content was identical, but the electronic editions provided users
with more powerful search functions. But soon the opportunities offered by
digital media began to be exploited. Two obvious advantages are that
limitations of space (and the need to optimize its use) become less pressing,
so additional content can be provided; and the possibility arises of including
multimedia content, such as audio pronunciations and video clips. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_dictionary).
Electronic dictionary
is one of part of ICT that can use in education. It has advantages and
disadvantages in using it. I want to analyze the advantage
and disadvantage of using electric dictionaries.Because nowadays more and more
students use electronic dictionaries instead of ordinary dictionaries, The
discussion about using electronic dictionaries has been popular these years.
Let's have a look at its advantages and disadvantages first. The most
important advantage of an electronic dictionary is that it’s very convenient to
use. Whenever you meet new words or expressions, you can know the meaning
quickly. You don’t need to waste much time turning the page seeking for the new
words . What's more, electronic dictionaries are becoming more and more
advanced: they can pronounce the words clearly, provide sample sentences to
illustrate word usage and store difficult words for special memorization.Thats
special function may help you remember some new words with high efficiency
.Last but not least, the designing of electronic dictionaries are more and more
portable, and they are easy for students carrying.
However, the negative effects are
also obvious. First of all, students may rely too much on the electronic
dictionary—they never put their heart into learning new words and expressions.
secondly, some explanations are neither complete nor accurate, which are quite
misleading. Finally, the convenient ways do not necessarily lead to progress in
learning. Diligence is always the decisive factor, because "there is no
royal road to learning".
Up until now, we can see it clearly
that an electronic dictionary is not beneficial or harmful in itself. The key
lies in the user—so long as we can make proper use of it, it can be helpful to
us in many respects. So no matter what kind of dictionaries we used,we shall
remember the new words as soon as possible after searching them (http://w521f12.blogspot.com/2012/10/the-advantage-and-disadvantage-of-using.html).
